Exercise Tip Thursday - Hydration

Another Thursday is upon us, friends, which means it's time for another Exercise Tip Thursday. This week's topic is hydration. We mention this topic frequently, but we really feel that we cannot stress enough the importance of hydration for optimal performance. Water is a great start for hydration, but it's important to also take in electrolytes while being active. And, you need more electrolytes than what a traditional gel or other nutrition replacement offers. This is because when you're sweating, you're also losing electrolytes through your sweat in addition to water. Being well-hydrated can also help with a variety of running ailments including plantar fasciitis, achilles tendonitis, shin splints, and others. Here at Fleet Feet, we like to say a tight muscle is a thirsty muscle.

Here at our store, we offer a variety of electrolyte replacements including Nuun, Skratch, and Salt Stick Caps. All three are great options and simply come down to your personal preference.

Each tablet offers 360 mg of Sodium, 100 mg of Potassium, 25 mg of Magnesium, and 13 mg Calcium. With fewer than 8 calories and no sugar, it doesn't offer things you don't need. SaltStick Caps are a great option if you don't want to drink your electrolyte replacement. They come in the form of capsules that you take every 30-60 minutes during exercise and closely resemble the electrolyte profile lost during activity. Taking these is beneficial in that they can minimize muscle cramping, heat stress, and fatigue (as can the other options). We also offer SaltStick Caps Plus which have caffeine in them.
